Compassionate Indiana Adoption Lawyers
Adoptions are usually finalized in a one day hearing in the Juvenile Court with the prospective parents and the children present. Once the Judge finds that the prospective parents' Petition to Adopt is in proper form and the adoption is in the best interests of the children, the Judge will enter a Decree of Adoption, the natural parents' rights will be terminated, and the children's names will be changed if requested by the adoptive parents. At the close of the hearing, the Judge will usually take a picture or two with the children and parents for a keepsake.
Before the hearing, there is a lot of preparation that you and your attorney will take part in, including a home study conducted by the local welfare department or a child placement agency. You must obtain hospital records where the adoptive child was born, obtain consents from the natural parent(s) of the child, and prepare the necessary court pleadings.
